Horses Help Heroes
Raising money for even the most worthy of causes during this ‘austere financial climate’ requires a challenge that is not only ambitious, grabs the attention and generosity of the British public and British business but is actually worthy of that generosity. ‘Horses Help Heroes’ is just that.
The appeal, under the banner of the hugely successful Help for Heroes, aims to raise money for injured British service personnel who return from operations, through completing a one-off challenge, to carriage drive a pair of horses the length of Britain in just ten days. The appeal has been backed by a number of high profile individuals, including the generous support of His Royal Highness Prince William:
“To carriage drive a pair of horses the length of Great Britain, continuously for ten days, combines in one the great British traits of thirst for adventure, support and compassion for our wounded soldiers, sailors and airmen, and a love of horses – with just the mildest sprinkling of healthy eccentricity…..I salute all those involved with Horses Help Heroes for their tireless commitment, energy and originality in their drive toward this vision. I urge everyone to support them, in whatever way they can.”
HRH Prince William of Wales
Challenge
The challenge inspired by a Wiltshire ambulance paramedic, is a 1000 mile, non-stop, horse drawn WW1 Red Cross Ambulance drive from Lands End to John O’Groats with a team of 10 wounded service personnel. It is a test of both human and equestrian endurance that will capture the imagination and interest of all horse lovers and supporters of our troops up and down the country.
Helping
Horses Help Heroes aims to provide direct financial support to those service personnel and their families who are most in need. Horses Help Heroes have set an ambitious but achievable target of £1 million to be raised from the event which will be distributed by Help for Heroes, and their Quick Reaction Fund (QRF), and three other reputable charities including The Army Benevolent Fund, Combat Stress, and BLESMA (British Limbless Ex Service Men's Association).
Drive
The challenge will take place in late June 2011 in order to make the most of summer daylight hours. The journey, through some of the great towns and cities up and down Britain, will take in a number of scheduled stops in order to enable local horse lovers, fundraisers and the larger population to participate. We also envisage a number of celebrities joining, and even driving, the ambulance on its journey.
Promotion
In the lead up to the event we shall be parading the WW1 Red Cross Ambulance replica, with the wounded service personnel at many large race meetings and outdoor events between December 2010 and June 30th 2011, starting with the British Military Tournament and The London International Horse Show Olympia and the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day this year.
Our website www.horseshelpheroes.org.uk has all the details of the promotional events as well as more detail on the drive and personalities involved as well as all the details you need to contact us and donate.
Please support this ambitious project in anyway you can.
