The day started off wet - went to drizzily - then dull - then sunny Happyish with the day. right leg and knee were still tight and hurting, so decided to take it steady. Did it faster than i thought i would have. first run nearly the same pace as my last 10k run at chichester, for me there was a few inclines on the run which slowed me down. It showed that i have not been on my road bike since last september, took a bit of time to shake the numbness out of the legs from the run. The route was very wet, lots of pot holes and a lot of diseal and oil every where. Second run was painful(nerve pain), but managed to run the full distance. Hopefully should have quailfied for the euro and world champs? contact with BTF was poor and no one knew what the qualifying distance was for para duathlon so hopefully the sprint distance was enough Finished 157 of 158 |

Very hard race, there was a strong head wind during the incline half of the race. went from 30kph to 15kph on bike. and it was easier to walk in places.
It was held on an air field which was not sheltered at all
Was not feeling to good (end of a cold) and managed to complete the comp in 1 hour 54. just over a minute slower than Clumber park.
I was last in and some Paras (with normal legs) were finished whilst i had 5k left on the bike and the run.
They had to wait for me brfore the awards. There were only 7 of us competing and so 5 of us got the gold medal and National champion So after coming in last, i was first in my Tri catagory and so a gold medal to add to my silver and bronze. |

A very hard race for me, but I could say that this was a PB, as i have never done this distance before.
I took the first run as easy as possible and was happy, the little inclines to the end of the course in the last 4 laps of 7 i walked.
Stuggled on the bike at first, and unfortunately when i got to the hill at washigton, before the A24 i could only get half way up . The run took more out of the legs than i thought( never ran 7k before a cycle before) . Whilst walking up the rest of the hill i damaged my cleat, which i had to repair, but once on the 24 i found my bike legs and the rest of the course was fine, and actually cycled faster by 2kph than the previous weekends race, even with the walk and repair.
The 2nd 5k was ok. used the same tactic and slowly(very) completed all 5 laps.
I was pleased to do the distance and i can say for me duathlons are harder than triathlons. |

Trip to Nancy was Hassel free, but very hot. Motorways in France were quick, but expensive. Stopped off at motorway cafe and pointed well in French. Took 5 hours from Calais and thank god for sat nav when I got to Nancy. Hotel was nice, plenty of room for the bike in the en suit. First evening my pointing in French did not work, every restaurant I went in could not understand my poor method of communication. There was one international restaurant where i could not go wrong in and my Le Mc Chicken burger was ok.
Day two, registered and gained socks, T-shirt, water bottle and rucksack. The para numbers are brown. There must be some symbolic idea about that. Went for a run around the run course and it was a lovely flat course. Better luck with the pointing as a lunchtime baguette went down well. The pasta party was in the local football stadium and was OK. Very loud music, speeches no one could hear, but went quickly.
Day three, Got up at six and went out on the bike around the route. Very flat, but lots of technical turns, tight areas and one steep ramp onto a duel carriage way. By the time you picked up speed here it was time to do another 90 degree turn. Race briefing went well, sat in the Grand hotel being briefed with chandeliers, fresco’s and paintings on the ceiling. There were two controversial issues. 1st, compression socks or similar were banned, managed to get the technical coordinator to allow me to wear mine. 2nd, they are going to use a yellow, red card system. If you are caught drafting or blocking then it is two mins in the penalty area near transition from when you dismount, you get a 15sec penalty if you are caught discarding rubbish onto the course. It was May Day, so no shops open, except for restaurants, managed to find a place to get a baguette (tuna salad). Spent the afternoon resting.
Race day: 12.55 was my start time, so watched some of the male(over 40) and all female age groups in the morning. Had some bad luck, whilst pumping up a tyre the valve snapped off and i locked myself out of my room twice . Started on time and five minutes later the under 40 men came rushing pass me. The first run was four 2.5k laps, but this was short by nearly 700m, my watch said only 9.3k for the 4 laps. I got around in about 1hr 11mins, which i was pleased with. The bike was 40k of 8 laps and again this was short by a few hundred meters on each lap, i was on the course on my own for three laps. A van kept driving alongside me asking how many more laps and they then took away the timing mats around the course on my last lap . The 5 k was two laps, which i ran on my own as everyone else had finished. My watch said 51.5k in total, which i did in 3hrs 24mins, my aim was 3hrs 30mins.
Disaster????? , went to the award ceremony and they did not call out my name to go up onto the podium . Questioned this after and they had DQ me for not completing the bike course . Joan the team manager explained to them that they removed the timing mats whilst i was on the last lap and after everyone had gone i was awarded my medal, with them apologising, but the moment had gone.

Used this tri as "i need a 750m swim in race conditions" ready for next Sunday. Planned to do a good swim, steady bike and very slow run. Was at a party in London the night before
Pleased with the swim as there were lots of swimmers behind me(for a change) , 89th of 104 at the chip timming, but passed by at least 10 who got out of the water after me on the long run from lake to TI.
Bike was Ok with some undulating roads and had to stop at traffic lights as a wheelchair user was crossing.
The run i did jog/walk mainly due to the heat (34 dgr in car)
so i did what i planned and a good preperation for Ireland next Sunday

What an excellemt experience and knackard.
Trip to Ireland on Thursday went to Plan, the closer we got to Holyhead the wetter it got.
Appartment was student accommodation, but huge with TV, cooking and ensuit facilities and all for 17 euros each per night. and it was 500m from the start.
Friday, cycled the course, very flat and into a head wind to the 10K turning point, return was fast. Went to the team managers hotel in the afternoon for a swim and a sit in the hot tub.
Race day - weather was windy and dry - except for a short period of hard rain.
started at 7.30 and had a good swim with a seasons best Bike was great with a PB Run had to walk some of the inclines, but about average for this year - needs to improve
The bronze medal ment more this time as 4 started in my catagory and for the first time i did not come last The ESP athlete i beat, last year at the hyde park event beat me by 4 mins in the super sprint and yeaterday i beat him by 8 mins over a sprint, which was pleasing . The first and second were 40mins faster than me The german who won was very appologetic for swapping his tri cat as he could fit into two different ones. He was loosing in the arm amputee cat, so as he had slight problem to a leg and swapped to my cat and so started to win again
What a great day, with an unexpected podium. the six pints of cider and partying to 2am, was a bonus.
Trip home started at 6am and arrived home at 7pm. |

My aim was to get some PB's which i am pleased to say i did. I was not expecting anything more than that as the fast boys were in town(see below for time differences)
Again this year it was very hot and we raced at 3.45.
Distances are slightly different than last year, the swim was 100m longer and a marshal sent us the wrong way on the bike so 800m short, so the longer swim would componesate for the shorter bike and so was faster this year by about 2 + mins
7th in my cat - 16mins to make up on the first place and 13 mins off Bronze

| It was a great day to race, pored down with rain the Saturday and Monday, but Sunday was that summers day we crave for.
Venue was the national watersport centre in Nottingham, conditions were great with that wind you expect to find when racing around an open rowing lake. 40kph one way, 20kph the other.
My time was the same as last year to the second, but in different conditions and location. The swim(100m) and run(400m) was also longer
The swim felt good and was probably longer by 100m than the stated 750m as they had to move a bouye to avoid weeds. If you think Bedford has weeds, try this venue. There were lots of areas where we were pulling ourselves through weeds and when breathing pulling up weeds with our goggles.
Bike was nice and flat, but with the wind prob mentioned. on my last lap i crashed into a blind pair who were teathered on their run. Because the normal run route was part grass they moved the blind and wheelchair route around the bike route. I got to the area where they had to turn around where it happened. The track was its thinest and they decided to run in the middle taking up most of the track, the ladies race was coming towards us on the right. So the only way to go was left, shouted that i was going that way, the guide went right, the runner went left, heals clipped, they fell over and i went between them, with the guide catching me on my bike and the runner on his backside.
The run was slow and steady , which i expected due to my back and calf niggles and ran it all except for water stops.
All in all I was very pleased, especially as i have had a back and calf problem for the past three weeks with not much training and had to pull out of two races. |

Started the drive to Edinburgh on Tuesday evening and stopped at my mum’s in Lincolnshire, woke up to mother cooking full English, could not say no.
Stopped off in Newcastle on Wednesday night at a very nice hotel. It was an old manor house and very cheap. I would recommend if you are going to Gateshead. Went for a 6k run along the river Wear and found a nice pub that evening. Could not get onto the internet there as when I asked for WiFi all I got from the aborigines was Wi I
Thursday drove the rest of the way to Edinburgh. Student accommodation was good. Cycled the bike route that afternoon and had a shock to the system. For someone who struggles up hills, I found that I had 8 hills to climb. Managed to cope with these long steady climbs. Pasta party was excellent, had to resist not eating too much, especially as there were lots of cakes.
Race day. Race briefing was a mess as the athletes had to tell the officials most of the rules. The compression socks were banned again. But after a many discussions I was allowed to wear mine.
Went down to transition where we were told we could go into the athletes lounge, the organisation was poor as they were still building it when we got there, along with the transition area. The only thing ready to go in the area was the burger bars.
The weather was very hot and we started at 2.15. The 1st run was 5.8km on a flat course (4 laps). I ran the first 3 laps as normal and eased up on the last to prepare for the bike. The bike was a hilly 23.8km (glad we did not have to go up the hill towards Arthur’s seat), I managed to get up all the hills with not stopping, even though slowly . The 2nd run was 3k and I could just about move my legs after riding the bike up those hills . It took 1 ½ laps to feel the legs again and finished stronger. I was not the slowest runner on the 2nd run. I was the last person on the course as usual and came 5th in my category. I had lots of encouragement from age groupers I have met and the commentators kept saying that I must have coached all these people in. I was last, but got the most popular athlete on the course award from the commentator.
Thanks to Erica and Andrew for shouting encouragement.
All in all I was very happy with my effort, especially as this was a very difficult course for me.
Went for an Indian and cider that evening, and took two days to get back to Seaford. |

| What an excellent experience, two World champs in 8 days.
Flew to Budapest on Wednesday with the usual delays, arrived to miserable weather.
Hotel was nice, but 6 miles from the team hotel and every race venue/location was spread out all over the place so saw a lot of Budapest by taxi.
Thursday, went and cycled the bike course, there was at least 100 brits cycling busy roads in the pouring rain. Had to rack the bike that evening so stayed wet all day and got wetter riding to the race centre and racking the bike, eventually got dry.
Race Day: alarm went off a 4am and waited in the rain for the organised transport to the race centre at 5.15am. and then spent the rest of the day being rained on.
My swim was average as the water was freezing, felt like razor blades cutting your face and found it difficult to breath. My bike was a PB which was very pleasing and the first time under 40mins in a 20k sprint race, especially happy as riding in the rain and wet conditions. My run was the best i have raced in a sprint all year and again the first time under 40mins . I ran the whole distance and it was lovely running along the banks of the rive Danube. Do not ask about the transition times as these need work on over the winter.
Came 8th out of 10 I still have 40mins to make up on the medalists
All in all my last race of the season was my best and will encourage me to improve things for next year . I have had a very satisfying season completing 6 triathlons and 5 duathlons and 5 of them have been in international events
