want to try.
My story began in 2008. This was my first year as a disabled athlete and I could only manage to swim breaststroke,
cycle short distances and was unable to run at all. Before this, I lacked motivation, strength and the ability to concentrate to carry out any physical activity and walked using my old NHS wooden walking sticks. This was a fun year, which encouraged me to take up sport with a more serious attitude.
In 2009 I took p art in 10 triathlons, bike time trials, cross country and road running races. I developed a running style using walking poles and managed to run several 10k races. I finished two Olympic distance triathlons and was able to swim the1500m distance in front crawl. I achieved all this by being mentally positive, motivated by people I have met along the way and building up strength through training. I pushed myself to train despite my disability and I had an abundance of encouragement from members of ‘The Tri Club Brighton Phoenix’ and from family and friends .
The highlight of the year was being invited to race for GBR in an international sprint triathlon in Hyde Park. I am so proud to represent and highlight disabled sport and will continue with this for as long as possible.
In 2010 I took part in the European and World triathlon championships and European and World duathlon championships, along with the national series. I had a great year winning two European bonze medals and two national medals. I travelled accross Europe to do this racing in England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Hungery.
After i was banned from local cross country races I took on England athetics and started the changes to their inclusive policy for grassroots athletics. I won the South East region award for services to disability issues for this.
In 2011 I plan to take part in the World and European triathlon and duathlon championships. I will focus on local standard distance triathlons. I have entered a 70.3 triathlon in Antewerp in July. I aim to develop my table tennis skills
I would encourage any disabled person to take part in sport and if you would like to talk to me about this please contact me at disabledathlete@googlemail.com
